Welcome to Ottawa for the 36th Annual Canadian Chess Challenge

The Chess'n Math Association is happy to welcome the provincial champions from grade 1 to grade 12 at this national finals.

This event will be held at University of Ottawa on May 18-19, 2025 (Victoria Day weekend).

Please make your team members aware of the following information: Due to constraints set by U of Ottawa, all registrations must be completed on-line (see below) by Monday, May 5, at 6:00p.m. If you miss the cut-off you can still book a suite directly through the university here. https://www.reservationdesk.com/hotel/6928287/university-of-ottawa-residence-ottawa-ontario?  However, access to the dining hall will not be available. You may still book the Monday pizza lunch by emailing Leslie at leslieaharmstrong@gmail.com by Thursday, May 15th and paying $10 cash per person on Sunday at the tournament. Envelopes with meal vouchers will be available at time of check-in at the residence. The boxed breakfasts must be picked up in the lobby of 90U(residence) at 7:30am on Monday morning. LOCATION AND SCHEDULE OF THE TOURNAMENT

The tournament will be held at The University of Ottawa near the Rideau canal, in the Tabaret building, 550 Cumberland St., Ottawa, K1N 6N8. The tournament will run from 8:30 am to 5:30 pm Sunday , May 18 & 9:00 am to 2:00 pm Monday 19, 2025.

 

REGISTRATION

Please complete the online registration form (see below) by the deadline of May 5th, 2025, 6pm. If you book meals or accomodation with us then complete the payment section at the end of the registration process (payment with a credit card only).

 

TRAVEL FROM/TO OTTAWA AIRPORT

We will not provide shuttle service to pick-up and drop-off visiting participants. A train is now available from the airport to the campus of uOttawa. The station is a very short walk from the 90U residence. More information can be found at : https://www.octranspo.com.

 

ACCOMMODATIONS

Ottawa University Residences

Participants can reserve an accommodation unit at the Residences through us. The unit is composed of two-bedroom units with a double bed in each. Private washroom with shower, AC, Fridge and microwave, Wi-Fi, bed linens, towels and toiletries included. Kitchenware is not included. Check-in at 4pm and check-out at 10:30am. The cost per unit is $156.00 tax included per night for up to 4 people (2 rooms). Players traveling alone must arrange to share a room with those who will be booking a unit (among the other participants of the provincial team). More details at : 90U residence

ORGANIZED MEALS

Dining Hall is all you can eat with a large variety of choices. It is located across from the residence at 85 University Private, Level 1. Saturday evening banquet will be held in the dining hall beginning at 5:00pm. The cost is $35 (tax included). Sunday breakfast cost is $16 (tax included) & Sunday Lunch cost is $26 (tax included). Due to the holiday on Monday the cafeteria is closed. They are offering a boxed breakfast which will be delivered to the 90U residence on Sunday evening. The breakfast choices for Monday, May 19 are as follows and includes Individually wrapped, including utensils and napkin. The cost for each option is $16 (tax included). No meal ticket sold on site.

  • Breakfast #1 - California club (serves 1) : California Club on Croissant: Chicken, Bacon, Avocado smash, lettuce, tomato. Nut Free Granola bar. Assorted juice.
  • Breakfast #2 - Yogurt Parfait (serves 1) : Pastry selection: Chocolatine, croissant, Gluten free muffing or cherry greek yogurt danish. Yogurt Parfait (Strawberries, vanilla yogurt, dry nut free granola). Choice of pastry. Hard-boiled egg. Assorted juice.
  • Breakfast #3 - Snack Pack (serves 1) : Snack Pack: Brie, Cheddar, Swiss cheese, with crackers and grapes. Hard-boiled egg. Nut free muffin. Assorted Juice.

For lunch on Monday, pizza will be available. The cost is $10 (tax included).

 

OTHER CHESS ACTIVITIES

A speed chess tournament (Blitz) will be organized for 2:00 pm on Saturday, May 17 (location to be confirm). Registration cost $20 ($30 on site). The Blitz is an open event. Parents, friends and members of the public are also welcome to play.

Bughouse (double blitz – 5 rounds) will take place following the awards ceremony on Monday, May 19 with a cost of $10 per person ($20 per person on May 19). Team of two players required. The Bughouse is an open event. Parents, friends and members of the public are also welcome to play.

 

WHAT TO SEE AND DO - OTTAWA TOURISM

Ottawa has so many things to see and do for all ages and interests that it was difficult to choose one. UOttawa is a great location from which to access many of these activities either by walking or public transit. It's the final weekend of the Tulip Festival, the Rideau Canal is right there and even the Parliament buildings are walkable. There are many museums, the Byward Market and the National Gallery. The Science and Tech Museum, Canadian War Museum as well as many others.
