Welcome to Moncton for the 35th Annual Canadian Chess Challenge

The Chess'n Math NB and the CMA National Scholastic Chess Organization is happy to welcome the provincial champions from grade 1 to grade 12 at this national finals.

This event will be held at Crandall University, on May 19-20, 2024 (Victoria Day weekend).


LOCATION AND SCHEDULE OF THE TOURNAMENT

The tournament will be held at Stultz Hall of Crandall University, located at 333 Gorge Road, Moncton, NB E1G 3H9. The tournament will run from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Sunday, May 19 & 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Monday, May 20, 2024 (more details are available on the "Schedule" section of this website).

 

REGISTRATION

Please complete the online registration form (see below) by the deadline of May 4th, 2024. If you booked some meals or activities with us then you will have to complete the payment section at the end of the registration process. You can pay either by Interac e-Transfer OR Credit Card. For payment by credit card, an additional 3% charge will be added for administration fees.

 

 

AIRPORT ARRIVALS AND DEPARTURES

We will arrange a free shuttle to pick-up and drop-off for each visiting province, getting to and from the Residences of Crendall University (Colburne House). The pick-up will be available, from the airport to the residence, 8 am - 5 pm on Friday only. The airport is 15 minutes from the Residences by car/taxi. Due to the number of vehicles available, the shuttle service will be available primarily to and from the Greater Moncton Roméo LeBlanc International Airport to the Residences of Crandall University. If you plan to stay in a Hotel, you will have to use a taxi service.

 

ACCOMMODATIONS

Dorm Room at Colburne House by Crandall University (Now available from Friday to Monday, May 17-18-19-20)

The dorm room at Colburne House is a walking distance to the playing area (3-4 minutes). We have two types of rooms available, either single occupancy or double occupancy. In both cases breakfast is included in the cost of the room (Hot breakfast on Saturday and Sunday, Continental breakfast on Monday). The cost for a single room is $70 per night tax and breakfast included. The cost for a double room is $130 per night breakfast for 2 and tax included. Common showers. Wifi included. Free parking nearby.

Hotels

Hotels within a few minutes from the University like Hampton Inn & Suites, Days Inn and Suits, Hotel Moncton, Quality Inn, Holiday Inn Express and Four Points by Sheraton.

 

ORGANIZED MEALS

A Banquet is organized Saturday May 18th 6:00 pm, at Crandall University, Stultz Hall in Cafeteria area with formal setting. The menu is Lasagna (vegan option) or Spaghetti with meatballs. includes caesar salad, garlic break, desert, coffee, tea or water. The cost is $30 per player/kid and $40 per adult (no ticket sales on site/advance purchase required). After the banquet, from 7 PM to 8:30 PM, we have entertainment for all hosted by a magician in the Auditorium close to Cafeteria.

Sunday and Monday lunches (May 19th & 20th) will be served at the cafeteria. Registration cost is $30/person for Sunday BBQ lunch : Hamburgers or hotdogs with coleslaw, macaroni or potato salad (no ticket sales on site/advance purchase required). Registration cost is $22/person for Monday DIY Taco Bar (no ticket sales on site/advance purchase required).

 

OTHER CHESS ACTIVITIES

A speed chess tournament (Blitz) will be organized for 2:00 pm on Saturday, May 18th at Crandall University, Stultz Hall playing area. Registration cost $20 per person ($30 per person on site). The Blitz is an open event. Parents, friends and the members of the public are also welcome to play.

Bughouse (double blitz – 5 rounds) will take place following the awards ceremony on Monday, May 20th with a cost of $10 per person ($20 per person on site). The Bughouse is an open event. Parents, friends and the members of the public are also welcome to play.

 

HOPWELL ROCKS PROVINCIAL PARK - Visit on Saturday morning

Charter to Hopewell Rocks and return, including admission into Hopewell Rocks and a guided tour in French or English. Pick up at 9 AM at Crandall University, Stultz Hall. Arriving at the park at 10:30 AM. Leaving the park at 12:30 PM. Return to Crandall at 1:30 PM. Cost is $50 per player/child and $60 per adult. Only 50 spots are available for this activity.

There is a Charter from Crandall University Stultz Hall to Hopewell Rocks for those that pre-registered.

Depart Crandall University 9:30 AM. The Charter will be there for 9 AM pick up.

Arrive at Hopewell Rocks 10:30 AM

Hopewell Rocks from 10:30 AM - 12:30 PM

Depart Hopewell Rocks 12:30 PM

Arrive at Crandall University 1:30 PM

Tour Guide and passes to get in to Hopewell Rocks will be given at Hopewell Rocks.

Registration for the charter includes the charter and pass to get in Hopewell Rocks

 

Saturday May 18th

Blitz Tournament at Crandall University Stultz Hall 2 PM – 6 PM.

Doors open at 12 PM where we will have an information booth to direct players.

Opening will be held in the Auditorium in Stultz Hall. Doors open at 7:30 AM.

Airport Charter

There will be a bus available to take players/parents back to the airport after the tournament is over.

We will do 3 trips from Crandall to the Moncton Airport. 3 PM, 4 PM and 5 PM.

 

Other Info

Classrooms are available to rent by the hour at $60 to have a team get together however there is lots or room throughout Crandall to do this. A classroom would be more private.

There are no spectators able to be inside the playing area due to the size of the room. Water will be available for players and coffee for the volunteers. I will have 2 monitors set up outside the playing area to be able to view the room and also view the score.

 

Green

We ask that everyone use reusable water bottles to promote a green environment to reduce the impact on the environment.

 

Accommodations

The rooms have Towels, bedding and soap are provided. Hair dryer and hangers are not .

Each pod with a shower has 4 rooms. I have booked 2 rooms per pod so only 2-4 people will need to share the showers. In cases where someone booked multiple rooms, I have placed them in their own pod. All players under 18 must be accompanied by a parent/guardian or coach to stay in the accommodations.

Breakfast is severed in the cafeteria in Stultz Hall from 7 AM – 8:30 AM Saturday, Sunday, Monday and Tuesday.

Stultz Hall at Crandall University is located the 2nd driveway on the right. There is lots of parking and parking is free.
